Dr. Mara Galvin and Dr. Carla Pearman are MonaLisa Touch laser treatment believers. They were the first in the practice to have the procedure, and they both experienced noteworthy improvements.

“I’m all about anti-aging. Anything that is going to help reverse the clock and restore a youthful vagina is a useful thing. And, this works.

We looked at several different lasers. There were some that would be half the cost and did a lot of other things, but they didn’t have the scientific studies behind them. MLT has far more scientific papers behind them, and they have ongoing studies as well. The papers looked at the histology of the tissue and demonstrated improvement in the glycogen and the change in the cell shape and function. We wanted scientific papers that say, in fact, it’s safe and that patients are seeing an improvement compared to the placebo.

Underneath the epithelium are several layers. One is called the lamina propria, and the laser spreads the energy laterally through the lamina propria and it’s drilling these holes, we’re talking fractions of millimeters, and this stimulates the fibroblasts to grow and create more collagen which stimulates new blood vessels.

It’s very safe. No adverse events in the US have been reported, no serious burns, no complications. There’s been a 95% patient satisfaction. We want something in that low risk, high return that patients are happy with.”

“Like all OB/GYNs, my patient population is aging right along with me so I see more and more women who are in the menopausal/post-menopausal age group. Almost universally, they complain about painful intercourse, dryness, frequent UTIs, having to use messy creams and supplements to help with intercourse. They don’t like that. Some women are afraid of using hormones; women who have had breast cancer can’t use hormones or are afraid to use hormones, which I understand. Finally, there’s technology that has come to the market that I think is a legitimate offer for them.

She [our rep] showed me the slides of the epithelium and the tissue of the vagina, how different they looked both before and after treatment, and it was really impressive. Then last summer I had an opportunity to go to a meeting on this and spent 2 days at the meeting hearing about it and talking to a lot of users. Some of the original developers were there. I was very  impressed with the company; I was impressed with the technology. And more importantly, I was impressed with what I was hearing from other users and their patient satisfaction. They loved it; they loved everything about it.

They [MonaLisa Touch company] could show you pictures, diagrams, of the actual epithelial slice. That for me is the money shot. Something that could actually change the nature of the epithelium in the vaginal tissue. It’s going to restore the normal chemical environment of the vagina.”
